Engineering College Applications Rise 10% in India

According to the Times of India, an overwhelming amount of students in Goa are applying to enroll in engineering schools this year. With a central focus on computer programming, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has reported 2,254 applications from students across Goa alone to enter engineering courses at the start of the next academic year.

Deputy director at the DTE, Pradeep Kusnur, informed that over the last few years majority of the students seeking admissions in engineering were interested in streams revolving around computers.

Officials informed that while the applications to join degree courses in engineering were increasing, the number of students seeking admissions to the diploma course had remained stagnant (at around 2,000) over the last few years. However, officials disclosed that all the seats, even in the diploma courses, get filled up each year.

Kusnur informed that due to the limited intake capacity for degree courses, students who are unable to get admissions, turn to colleges located outside Goa.

The state of Goa offers eight publically-funded colleges with such desired focuses, but the sheer amount of applications means that there just aren't enough facilities to cater to everyone's needs. As such, many students are looking to school outside the state or to online engineering degrees as a viable education alternative.
