Top Physician Assistant Programs
The US News and World Report annual survey of colleges and universities has a ranking for top Physician Assistant (PA) programs in the country that varies significantly from the list of top medical schools, which includes the high priced and high powered schools that populate many graduate school top ten lists. Here are the best PA schools according the 2010 US News report.
Ten of these schools are public universities, and one of them is operated by the United States Military at an Army Base in Texas. The Interservice program (ranked #11) trains PAs for all branches of the military, and apparently trains them well.
Most applicants to PA educational programs already have a college degree and some health-related work experience; however, admissions requirements vary from program to program. Many PAs have prior experience as registered nurses, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics
According to the American Academy of Physician Assistant there are over 30 specialties in the field. While the training program usually takes two years, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics the large majority of PA educational programs award a masters or bachelors degree.
