The traditional construction trades plumber, electrician, carpenter, roofer, ironworker, HVAC are still often taught through apprenticeship programs, most of which take three years or more to complete. There are classroom components to all of them though, which can be completed beforehand. Building maintenance requires the same skill sets. Management positions include construction manager, cost estimator and construction superintendent. All of these positions usually require industry experience plus a modicum of formal education in the field.
