The US News and World Report’s annual ranking of best colleges and universities includes rankings for specialties such as top nursing schools. Their rankings show a top eleven schools, since five of them tied for seventh place.
• University of Washington (three campuses)
• University of California/San Francisco (The UC Berkeley Medical School)
• University of Pennsylvania
• Johns Hopkins in Baltimore
• University of Michigan
• University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill
• Oregon Health and Science University
• University of Illinois
• University of Maryland
• University of Pittsburgh
• Yale University
None of these schools offer an associate’s degree in nursing or a diploma nursing program. All of the undergraduate programs are the BSN (Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing); Michigan offers a 12 month accelerated programs for students with a bachelor’s degree in another field. All are research centers as well, with tremendous graduate programs for either research or nurse management. Pennsylvania offers a BSN in Health Management that is a collaborative effort with the University’s Wharton School of Business.
The future for most nursing aspirants is probably the BSN degree, because it provides the credentials for management level assignments in the profession. However RNs can still test for licensure with a clinical nursing degree at the associate’s level, usually obtained at a community college. When you are selecting your school, the most important question is about the percentage of nursing graduates that usually pass the licensure exam (NCLEX RN) the first time.
