Cosmetology School: Benefitting Everyone

As some industries take a hit in our current economy, other industries continue to chug along or even boom. Beauty is one ideal that will never go out of fashion, and as such, cosmetology school has become an increasingly appealing option for many potential students. In fact, enrollment is reaching record highs as beauty schools increasingly attract people from every walk of life, from eager high school graduates to older people stuck in a mid-career or unemployment rut — really, anyone looking for rewarding and opportunity-filled career.

The worsening economy has people looking for jobs that might be around tomorrow and skills that might help them form the foundations for businesses of their own.

So at a time when many businesses are struggling, the beauty college is booming with enrollment peaking in this, its 70th year. With about 185 students enrolled, ‘we’re right about at the high-water mark,” said John McCuen, admissions director.

Although the college attracts many young people through ongoing programs in cooperation with Mason, Bedford, Ida, Dundee and Airport High Schools, it also has been getting substantial numbers of older students.

“It’s a nice fit for a lot of people, particularly mid-career people,” Mr. McCuen said.

What’s more, cosmetology schools benefit more than just the students. In tighter economic times, more people are turning to beauty colleges as a practical alternative to expensive hair salons, a practice that helps the schools (more volunteer models!) as much as it helps Jane Q. Public (a trendy new hairstyle on a beauty school budget!). It’s a win-win situation all around.

The beauty school’s student salon at 15233 S. Dixie Hwy. recently was buzzing with activity and each chair was filled with customers. A basic haircut is $6, a cut and style is $9.50. Facials start at $15. “I don’t think you’ll beat that anywhere,” Mr. McCuen said. “With the economy the way it is, people are looking for value, and this is a real value.”

Whether just breaking into the career world, or looking for new marketable skills to begin a new chapter in your life, more and more people are looking to a cosmetology degree to make that happen.
