Unemployment Leads Many Back to Beauty School
With the ongoing recession and spike in unemployment, many are flocking back to college for a new degree to increase their marketability, especially those who put their education dreams on hold to pursue what was once a more lucrative path. One extremely popular choice, as of late, has been career-changers enrolling in cosmetology schools, a career path many are considering to be virtually recession-proof.
The American Association of Cosmetology Schools says more students are coming to them for a Plan B.
“I started to notice that the economy started going down and my business started to slow,” Scott Brown said. Brown came to the Academy of Cosmetology Arts in Denver when he realized he would need to do something besides the furniture business. “One of the things I started thinking about was: What survives in a slow economy?” Brown said.
The answer? According to the numbers, beauty school.
“Our typical student is customarily a job changer,” Academy founder Peggy Sue Schmoldt said.
She says the school has been growing in recent years as people are looking for a new career that is still in high demand or returning to their roots in cosmetology.
Along with beauty services being a relative necessity these days, many have noticed that flexible schedules and night courses at most beauty schools make it easier to study while still holding onto a current job and keep finances afloat — a win-win situation all over.
