Two Private Universities Moving into Mississippi
The University of Phoenix, the world’s largest provider of online degrees and campus college programs, has announced their intention to open a facility in Flowood, Mississippi – a suburb in the Jackson metropolitan area. Strayer University, another large private institution that operates dozens of campuses and enrolls thousands of online students, has also announced their goal of opening a facility in the Jackson area next year.
Both schools will be opening facilities in a metro area that already has Jackson State University, a Tulane University satellite campus, two community colleges and four cosmetology schools. Virginia College, another private for-profit institution is already in operation in Jackson, in Biloxi, and on eleven other campuses in the south. Although they are joining a number of existing facilities, they fill a niche that has room for growth according to the Jackson Clarion Ledger.
The University of Phoenix (UOP) has yet to describe the initial structure and educational options for the Jackson campus. Currently they have about 4,800 online students in the state. The facility will initially provide support for the online programs along with equipment and counseling designed to expand the parameters of their online programs, providing personal contact with academic experts as well as other students. Local presence will also provide UOP with the ability to align with local facilities in order to provide the on-site training needed for programs leading to nursing degrees and some teaching degrees.
The University of Strayer intends to provide 29 programs ranging from certificates to master’s degrees. Like other Strayer campuses the education choices will generally focus on business degrees, public administration, teaching, criminal justice and health care. Currently Strayer has online options for criminal justice as well, including two bachelor’s degrees with specialization in homeland security skills. Strayer officials say they had over 1,000 inquiries about a Mississippi campus before deciding to develop a facility in the Jackson area.
Virginia College does not see a lot of competition from the two new academic institutions coming to town, because their most popular choices are for certificates and associate’s degree programs. The largest programs at Virginia College in Jackson are studies to become a medical office assistant, pharmacy technician or administrative assistant, as well as medical insurance coding, cosmetology and information technology degrees that become the groundwork for later specialization in the field.
