Radiology Society Donates $191K in Research Grants

It’s a great week for scholarships: The Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation has just handed out thirteen grants for the purposes of development of interventional radiology research. The grants totaled in excess of $191,000, giving the lucky hospitals, radiology schools, and deserving students plenty of reasons to cheer.

“SIR Foundation is proud to be able to contribute to the advancement of interventional radiology research. The SIR Foundation grant program is designed to benefit researchers at all levels-from medical students to established practitioners-and the grant program provides an excellent return on investment,” said Mike Darcy, M.D., FSIR, Foundation chair. “SIR Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in grant funding over the past 15 years, and Foundation grant recipients have subsequently received more than $50 million in all source grant funding, with nearly $40 million being awarded by the National Institutes of Health,” added the interventional radiologist at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, St. Louis, Mo.

Clifford R. Weiss, M.D., of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, received the prestigious Dr. Ernest J. Ring Academic Development Grant to help in the support of junior interventional radiology faculty members as he continues development of his research into guided transplantations; meanwhile, several doctors received the Pilot Research Grant in order to fund further research on their respective projects. In addition, several undergraduate students with a keen interest in radiology were awarded the Student Research Grant, giving them funding for a summer research project submitted and approved by the SIR Foundation as important and relevant to the advancement of radiology.
