Scholarships Seeking Applicants?

In a time of economic crisis, wouldn’t you think that high school students would be vying for scholarship monies that were available to them?  High school students in Las Vegas and other parts of Clark County, NV are apparently not very interested.  The deadline for scholarship applications is February 10, and the Clark County Public Education Foundation is hoping people start applying.

The grant and scholarships coordinator for the foundation says the number of applications last year was disappointing, about 2,800 from a pool of 13,000 high school students.

Shana Venenga says the Las Vegas Elks Club wanted to give four scholarships last year to physically challenged students, but awarded only two because of a lack of response.

The foundation, which administers about 80 scholarship programs, sent postcards to every high school senior advising them of the deadline to apply for the programs.

Scholarships range from one-time gifts of $500 to $10,000 each year of school. The foundation awarded $826,000 last year.

Hopefully this is not indicative of how many students in Southern Nevada intend to continue higher education.
