Sonography is the technique used in what is popularly known as "ultrasound" imaging. Technicians who work in this field undergo two years' training and emerge from their academic endeavors with a degree and the ability to pass a licensure test.
The most widely known use of sonography is to determine the health and gender of a fetus. Beyond that procedure however, are many others that have developed due to the fact that sonograms depict soft tissues in a different fashion than either X-rays or MRI studies. Depending on the study, the technician uses sound waves of varying lengths and intensity, as well as one of a number of "cones" that focus the sonographic waves.
