Capella University Announces Matching Funds for Veterans
Capella University has announced its participation in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Yellow Ribbon Program. This is a new educational component to the existing VA support for veterans' provided in the GI Bill. The Yellow Ribbon Program allows colleges and universities to provide matching funds for tuition costs to veterans who meet certain criteria. Eligible veterans must have served on active duty since September 10, 2001. The service requirement for most veterans is three years, although veterans with disabilities need only have 30 days of contiguous service since 9/11.
This new section of the GI Bill providing benefits for veterans who have served since the 9/11 attack adds to the education options provided by existing GI Bill benefits. Because the impact of the Yellow Ribbon Program on existing Montgomery GI Bill benefits can be complicated, veterans who are interested in this opportunity should consult with the VA on their veteran's rights to education support based on their service records. Currently more than 1,500 veterans are enrolled at Capella using their GI benefits.
Capella University has studied the VA Yellow Ribbon Program requirements and has chosen to participate in the program at both the undergraduate and graduate level, with the result that veterans with full education benefits can attend Capella with no out of pocket expenses.
According to a University spokesman, Capella has set no limits on how many students may participate in the Yellow Ribbon program, or set caps on tuition expenses that can be incurred. Capella students who participate in the Yellow Ribbon can enroll in any of the university's online degree programs at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Capella University is an accredited, fully online university that focuses on degree programs for working adults. Eighty-two percent of Capella students are currently enrolled in masters, specialist, or doctoral degree programs. Fifteen hundred current Capella students are veterans.
Graduate degree programs at Capella University include comprehensive options in the fields of business, information technology, education, human services, psychology, public health, public administration, and public safety. The bachelor's degree programs include options in the business, information technology, public administration, and public safety fields.
