Distance Learning Picks Up Steam in Iraq
One of distance learning's biggest benefits is its availability no matter where on earth you are, even in the middle of a war zone. This has not escaped the attention of many soldiers currently serving in Iraq, as many are turning to an online education to help secure a future once their military term is over.
April Triplett, a 32-year-old married mother of six from Copperas Cove, Texas, is serving her country in Iraq while arming herself with a critical tool: a college diploma from Excelsior College, the country's most established, accredited distance learning institution. Triplett joins a growing number of active duty military and reserve personnel pursuing online degrees to help secure themselves for a rocky economy and post-military careers.
"I'm very optimistic about the degree I'm earning and appreciative of this opportunity so that I can make a better living for my family," said Triplett.
Besides flexibility of schedule, some distance learning schools apparently even offer extra credit of sorts to military personnel, which also helps to make military online degrees more popular than ever. Any morale boost is a good thing for our troops, but the promise of a brighter future that comes with a real military education is especially sweet.
