Accounting Schools F.Y.I.

Accounting schools prepare you to climb the ladder in a valuable profession. If math is one of your strong points, along with organization and interaction, you're already halfway to a career in accounting. Accounting schools will lead to the degree you need to land a position in this valuable field. Accounting schools offer both bachelor and master degrees. Although some accounting jobs call for master degrees, many entry level positions may be accessed by graduates with bachelor degrees.

However, a salary survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers stated that those with bachelor degrees from accounting schools received an average starting offer of $43,269 in 2005, while candidates with master degrees from accounting schools were given offers around $46,251.

As you begin to research various accounting schools, be sure to consider the state or states in which you may practice accounting. In early 2005, 42 states and Washington, D.C., upped the curriculum of students in Certified Public Accounting (CPA) schools to 150 semester hours of college study, 30 more hours than the standard 120-hour education necessary for four-year degrees. By 2009, five more states will join this trend, making Colorado, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Vermont the only states that continue to offer degrees from accounting schools in 120 semester hours.

No matter what state your accounting school's in, you'll be required to sit for the two-day Uniform CPA Examination before gaining valid certification. The computerized test is offered quarterly at testing centers across the country.

Once certified, CPAs can put the knowledge they gained from accounting schools to work in their daily profession. You will be the go-to guy or gal for your employer, which may be the government, a corporation, a small business, or any other establishment that deals with money.

Fortunately for you, most organizations do deal with money, so there will be no scarcity of jobs for those with degrees from accounting schools. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, accountants held about 1.2 million jobs in the 2004.
