The Federal Aviation Administration is responsible for making sure that training programs meet federal standards so that mechanics can find jobs with private airline companies or in the public sector. There are a few people who acquire their training through on-the-job experience, but this is not the case for most. Generally, the FAA standards state that the courses have 1,900 class hours as a minimum. Due to this requirement, programs run between 1 and 2 years, offering certificates and associate degrees. Additionally, 1/3 of the FAA approved programs also offer 2 and 4 year degrees in aviation technology, aviation maintenance, and avionics. Students will learn things like mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer and information technology, and mechanical drawing. Upon graduating from one of the many aviation mechanic schools, professionals can go on to pursue a license from the FAA. This license requires a written, oral, and practical test to be passed.
