Guide to California Accounting Degree Programs

Are you interested in becoming an accountant? If so, then California is the place for you. There are programs available in 40 different cities across the state, and you always have the option to study online. That way you can go to school anywhere you want. If a traditional program fits your ambitions, you might be attending ITT Tech, the University of Phoenix, Heald College, Golden Gate University, Charter College, or Everest College, just to name a few. You can go for a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field, depending on where you want your education to take you.

The amount of courses you take will be based on the degree level you wish to get, but the courses will be the same to start. You will have to get through the basics of math, English, history and the like before you can graduate, but that should only take up a bit of your studies. After that, you may be engaged in courses like federal taxation, cost accounting, leadership and business, and personal finance. There are also opportunities to complete elective courses so you can expand your horizons a bit. You can even develop a minor if you’d like.

California Accounting Job Outlook and Salary

The job outlook for accounting is certainly on the positive side as expansion in this field is expected to be higher than the job expansion overall for the country. There are several things that contribute to this, but the main component has been a change in financial laws. Now if any financial reporting fraud occurs, the chief executive of the establishment is held personally responsible. Thus business leaders are seeking out accountants more and more over the years for fears of the consequences that may emerge come an audit. An increase in the prevention against embezzlement and other financial crimes has also caused a rise in demand.

Your earning options will vary for accounting jobs based on the kind of job you have. Working on your own, you may make $30,000 or so the first year. Over the course of time that number could rise to $50,000 annually, depending on your skill and location. However, working for the government might provide you with that $50,000 a year as a starting salary. Numbers can go up to $70,000 in that field. If you wish to work in such a position, you’ll need to get a master’s degree to help set yourself above the competition.
