Computer Repair
Computers somehow know to malfunction when we need them most. Crashed hard drives, virus, and lost passwords seem to wait until we are at our most vulnerable. And often, it is not simply the computer itself that we want to save, but also the information and data that the computer stores. In these desperate moments, we typically turn to computer repair technicians who "hopefully" can help us restore function and retrieve valuable information. Although technically anyone can troubleshoot a malfunctioned computer, we usually rely on those with compute repair training to aid us in our hour of need.
Computer Repair Training
Although no formal requirements exist for the wider industry, most employers (and clients) prefer to hire those with certificate or collegiate training in computer repair. Through coursework and exams, you learn the various troubleshooting steps necessary for today's increasingly sophisticated computers and software. The first line of repairs usually involves reconfiguring settings, deleting unnecessary files, or reinstalling critical ones (much of which can be done via telephone support). When these steps fail, you must rely on your hardware repair training. This might include everything from fan replacement to memory installation to hard drive upgrades. These fixes usually require onsite inspections. And because many technicians interact directly with clients, it is important that you master the necessary people skills required for this job. Many users are "emotionally unstable" by the time they connect with you. Diplomacy, tact, and understanding are incredibly useful in this line of work.
Career Outlook for Computer Repair
Job opportunities are expected to be favorable for computer repair technicians over the next 8-10 years. Current estimates place industry growth at 13%-18% from 2006 to 2016. This makes perfect sense when you understand how the industry works. When the economy is strong people buy more computers, which means more potential clients. When the economy is weak, people hold onto their computers longer, which means more potential clients. Armed with the appropriate skills and training, you can help satisfy this demand.
