Carpenter Degrees

Carpenters and woodworkers are involved with a variety of different responsibilities, including construction, manufacturing, home repair, and interior design. Using a number of different materials (usually wood), they create, erect, install, and repair everything from furniture and cabinets to stage sets and buildings. Some carpenters work in smaller woodshops or garages, while others work with larger teams during major construction projects. Regardless of whichever environment appeals to you most, you should consider formal training and an apprenticeship for this career field.

Carpenter Training

Although few formal training requirements exist in carpentry, you typically need 3-4 years of classroom instruction plus hands-on experience to become an accomplished carpenter. And although not required, certification is also recommended. Through this training and exam preparation, you not only learn about the various carpentry techniques of the trade, but you also learn about equipment maintenance and repair, safety, and material selection. You might also consider supplementing your education with business administration courses. That is because nearly 33% of all carpenters are self-employed. Having these skills under your belt could make it easier to secure clients and contracts once you graduate.

Career Outlook after Carpenter Training

Job growth and opportunities should be favorable once you enter the real world. New positions for carpenters are expected to keep pace with the national average for most other occupations. By completing extensive formal training and certification, you can potentially increase your marketability and enjoy even more opportunities in the coming years.
