If you've looked over the want ads in the local paper, you already know about the need for teachers in your community. In the broader education field, there is an especially dire shortage of secondary school teachers across the country. Many school districts are initiating emergency teacher certification training to help fill vacancies. Schools need you now! There are many training options to prepare for work in education. For some, earning a bachelor's degree and a state certificate will land you in the classroom. If you already hold a bachelor's degree, accelerated master's degrees and teacher-training certification programs are working overtime to prepare graduates for the profession.
Education is Calling
Whether your heart says to teach preschool, elementary, secondary, or college, your preparation begins with a school search. Depending on your calling, weigh the educational requirements for grade levels and evaluate the degree programs offered by teacher-training schools.
For elementary and secondary education, all 50 states require teachers to hold certifications (or licenses). The process is expedited in areas where teacher shortages are severe. In some cases, you can even begin substitute teaching or classroom work while you attend school for your degree. You'll need to meet the minimum requirements of a bachelor's degree.
For post-secondary teaching at community colleges, a bachelor's degree may suffice for a limited number of arts or business-specific education programs. Typically, you'll need at least a master's degree for teaching in post-secondary education, and for teaching university-level courses you'll need a PhD in your field.
You can start today by writing teacher-training schools for information about the programs they offer. The sooner you enter the classroom for training, the sooner you'll enter your own classroom as a teacher.
