Guide to Maryland Ultrasound & Sonographer Degree Programs

The ultrasound technician is a key player on the healthcare team. The sonogram is a painless and non-invasive procedure that uses sound wave technology to capture images of the internal structures of the body.  Those images are then turned into videos or photographs that the attending physician can use to help diagnosis issues.  Because these procedures don’t involve any type of surgery, they are very useful in helping to determine issues with patients in a cost effective manner.  Physicians often prefer to use the sonogram as a diagnostic tool with patients who may be unable to handle other types of procedures that would require the use of anesthesia.

The sonographer will be asked to take pertinent patient history and record observations about the patient during the procedure.  So, besides being highly skilled at using the ultrasound equipment to create the necessary images, the sonographer must possess excellent communication skills.  This is a crucial function of this position; the ability to effectively interact with both patients and physicians. Some of the other daily tasks of the ultrasound technician would include properly calibrating and maintaining the equipment, keeping track of supplies, and scheduling patients.

Prospective students in the state of Maryland have several excellent education options when it comes to selecting a school with programs in sonography.  Most courses of study in this field will take anywhere from one to four years to complete.  Students in this area of study may choose to further their education and get an advanced certification in one of the many specialized sonography applications such as echocardiography or neurosonology.

Maryland Ultrasound & Sonographer Job Outlook and Salary

The job outlook for qualified and experienced sonographers in all parts of Maryland continues to move in a positive direction. The most common setting for employment as an ultrasound technician is in a hospital, but jobs are also available in a variety of other locations such as physicians’ offices and specialized imaging laboratories.  Because of the nature of this type of job, there are some physical requirements to consider.  The ultrasound technician must be able to stand for long periods of time to operate the equipment properly.  While the equipment is usually on wheeled carts, it can still be quite cumbersome to move. Sonographers must also have good hand-eye coordination to be able to properly locate the intended area and capture the appropriate images.

Once you complete your education, you can expect to make an annual salary as a full-time sonographer that ranges between $54,000 and $76,000.  The salary you earn will be dependent on the area where you live and the employment setting, meaning those working in a major hospital in an urban area can expect to earn more than a sonographer at a private practice in a more rural area of Maryland.  Salaries are also dependent on the experience, education, and specialization of the sonographer.
