Phlebotomy Degrees

Phlebotomy is the science of extracting blood samples for testing. Phlebotomists also handle and store blood samples and prepare them for testing. They may be required to deal with other bodily fluids. Due to the difficult nature of drawing blood from some patients, there are special categories for pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.
Many states require a certificate in phlebotomy for those in the medical field whose responsibilities include drawing blood. Certification courses tend to be short and can be completed in a matter of weeks. Health care workers with many years of hands on experience can often become certified without taking a certification course. Due to the very specific nature of phlebotomy, degree and diploma courses in phlebotomy are hard to find. Degrees in medical assisting, medical technology, nursing, and nursing assistance often include coursework in phlebotomy.

The job prospects for phlebotomists are various, though specialization in another aspect of the health care industry will improve your chances of getting a desirable position. Blood banks, hospitals, and other health care institutions require phlebotomists. A certificate in phlebotomy could also lead to training in another health care specialty, such as working as a clinical technician or medical assistant. Phlebotomists average less than $12 per hour, but specialists with other skills can earn nearly twice as much according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
