Ultrasound (also called Diagnostic Medical Sonography) is a diagnostic tool that uses high frequency sound waves to make images of internal systems. No state currently requires licensing or certification for ultrasound technologists, but many practitioners become credentialed by a professional society to improve their career prospects and to put their patients at ease. Many schools offer an associate of applied science degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Students will take classes in general physiology, anatomy, and patient. They will also be given coursework in all kinds of ultrasound techniques, from abdominal ultrasound to obstetrics. Good programs will offer clinical practice to prepare students for work in hospitals or clinics. Ultrasound classes are also available to those whose medical responsibilities might include the need for ultrasound.

A trained and credentialed ultrasound technologist can earn an above average salary. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in its May survey, found that the median salary for diagnostic medical sonographers was $59,860. They are employed in hospitals, outpatient clinics, private practices, and in specialty clinics.
