Ultrasound Degrees
One of the most interesting medical technologies invented in the recent past is the Ultrasound. Ultrasound (also called Diagnostic Medical Sonography) is a diagnostic tool that uses high frequency sound waves to make images of internal systems. Ultrasound is most famously used in watching the progress of fetal development in pregnant women, but there are many applications for ultrasound. Any kind of inner trauma or pain can be investigated and diagnosed using ultrasound technology. Ultrasound technologists are specialists that operate the technology and analyze ultrasound tests.
No state currently requires licensing or certification for ultrasound technologists, but many practitioners become credentialed by a professional society to improve their career prospects and to put their patients at ease. Many schools offer an associate of applied science degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Students will take classes in general physiology, anatomy, and patient. They will also be given coursework in all kinds of ultrasound techniques, from abdominal ultrasound to obstetrics. Good programs will offer clinical practice to prepare students for work in hospitals or clinics. Ultrasound classes are also available to those whose medical responsibilities might include the need for ultrasound.
A trained and credentialed ultrasound technologist can earn an above average salary. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, in its May survey, found that the median salary for diagnostic medical sonographers was $59,860. They are employed in hospitals, outpatient clinics, private practices, and in specialty clinics.
