Religion Degrees

If you are fascinated by the world's religions or are profoundly interested in the questions concerning the meaning of life, academic study might give you a foundation of knowledge on which to build. You can also make a career out of religion, taking office in a major religion, teaching religion or philosophy at a school, or work in public policy. There are many legal and political questions arising from the role of religious life in a secular world.

The number of religion degrees available is truly astounding. Ranging from associate's degrees in a specific religion to doctoral degrees in comparative religion and philosophy, the choices are staggering. Associate's degrees are available in the major religions. Classes will focus on religious rites, customs, and doctrine. Bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees are available to study a particular religion. You can also study comparative religion or the philosophy of religion. A higher degree is necessary for most teaching posts.

The number and type of jobs available to those holding degrees in religion are as various as the degrees themselves. Some degrees are designed to qualify a person for the ministry of a particular religion. Other degrees are much more academic and qualify the bearer to teach at secondary or postsecondary institutions. A professor of religion at university made a median wage of $62,680 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Junior college salaries were less, while religious organizations paid significantly less to teach religion.
