About Web Design Schools

While what is known as the 'world wide web,' or, simply, 'the web,' may appear to be an arcane, incredibly complex phenomenon, its underpinnings are actually quite simple. At its most basic, it simply consists of software which adheres to agreed-upon standards and protocols, displaying information using a combination of hypertext (a simple, web-oriented programming language) and various multimedia elements, such as pictures, graphics, videos, etc. Such fundamental simplicity, in combination with the human desire to share and collect information, probably helps explain why literally billions of web pages now exist online.

The need to create, maintain, and modify all these websites has brought about the profession known as "web designer". A typical web designer combines knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) programming with graphic design and visual communication skills. While some web designers are self-taught, the increasingly high standards demanded from even basic websites nowadays have led to a greater call for designers with professional training from web design schools. Web designers with such training can expect higher than average growth rate in their field, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There are a variety of programs currently offered by web design schools, ranging from certificate programs lasting a few months, to formal associates or bachelor's degrees with web design as a major. A typical web design school's curriculum offers courses in web basics like Introduction to Web Design, Basic HTML Programming, and Design and Composition Fundamentals, along with instruction in programs and technologies such as Photoshop, Flash, and Illustrator. Many such degrees are even offered online, giving students direct exposure to the convenience and capabilities of the World Wide Web.
