A New Emphasis on Career Development in the Works for Washington State University
Changes may be in the works for Washington State University -- not the least of which is a whole new college within its walls. With the elimination of another outdated wing, this college is slated to focus on general studies, honors courses, and a new section specializing in helping students find their best careers for the future.
The proposed new unit would be called University College and report to the provost's office. The Office of Undergraduate Education would be eliminated, so there would be no additional costs.
Many WSU students don't go directly into a major and there's a period when they are not affiliated with any college. The new unit would provide advising and academic support to such students. Officials said that should help in retention and help more students graduate on time.
A college taking the time to help students figure out a solid career path? If only more colleges were so devoted! This sounds like a great plan for student success, but it isn't finalized yet. College officials will be bringing the plans before the Faculty Senate in the fall, so wish them luck.
