Jill Biden Praises U.S. Community Colleges as Ideal Models for the Developing World
In an interview given during her five-day visit to Europe this week, Jill Biden -- wife of Vice President Joe Biden -- mentioned community colleges as a vital tool in helping overcome the United States' economic crisis, and as a role model for education systems in other nations.
According to The New York Times, Mrs. Biden refers to community colleges in her interview as one of the country's "best kept secrets," and calls them the "way of the future" by their giving the rising number of unemployed citizens a place to go for new career training. She then goes on to explain the role of higher education in the Obama administration -- especially popular modern majors like green degrees -- as a tool to stimulate the economy and a function of society deserving of increased support.
On a global scale, Mrs. Biden praises vocational schools as "lead[ing] the way in preparing graduates in the fields of green technology, health care, teaching and information technology -- some of the fastest-growing fields in America and the rest of the world." The article reports that this statement reflects a global feeling as developing countries like Pakistan and Qatar recently announced plans to build universities in the hopes that they will compete with other world-class institutions.
At the moment, according to NYT, the United States contains almost 1,200 community colleges, with nearly 12 million students in attendance.
