Northeastern University adds to Online Music Ed Program
Northeastern University is moving from the experimental to the essential in its use of distance learning for music students. The school has announced an agreement with Noteflight, a music software and education firm also located in Boston, to expand their online course opportunities in music.
Music Department Chairman Anthony DeRitis said, "The Northeastern University Music Department has, for the last 10 years, been at the forefront of creating and implementing online music resources and content, starting with the immensely successful Boston Symphony Orchestra Online Conservatory and current online music learning modules..." the school will be presenting their Music Fundamentals and Music Theory course as online courses, adding to the "refresher" in Music Fundamentals that was provided to incoming freshmen this year."
"Noteflight is ahead of the curve with their web-based music notation tools and together we believe we will continue to push the envelope with regard to online music education," said DeRitis.
This development becomes more interesting after a look at the majors offered for undergraduates in the music program. Although it's a music major, one bachelor's program in the music industry is essentially a business degree. For the student who wants an IT degree in the field the Northeastern Music Department offers a major in music technology. And for music majors who are drawn to Web 2.0 careers or perhaps a position in the game industry there is a multimedia degree that is a double major offered by the Music and Art Departments.
A few years ago offering college course in music online would have seemed a far-fetched concept. Now broadband and innovative software are making course presentation possible - in the not-too-distant future, you may see most components of a music degree available through distance learning.
