Though Cornell is an Ivy League school, it is also one of two private land-grant colleges in the nation. As such it receives state support for four of its colleges, one of those being the College of Veterinary Medicine. Accordingly, residents of New York who enroll in Cornell's veterinary school pay a reduced tuition. That leaves Tufts as the only private institution listed among the top veterinary schools in the country.

Veterinary medicine is a four year course of study for students wishing to become a full fledged vet. There are only 28 colleges in the US that meet the accreditation standards set by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), fifteen of which are listed here. There is a projected shortage of qualified veterinarians both in this country and internationally.
