Top 20 Public Health Schools

Public Health professionals are becoming key officials at the municipal, county and state level as the public safety net continues to widen. Private health insurance continues to remain out of reach for over 15% of the nation's population. There are public health nursing degrees today; there are also several medical training options geared to public health clinics and hospitals. Social and human services assistants jobs in this field are growing rapidly.

The US West News and World Report annual survey of colleges and universities cites these schools as having the top public health programs in the country.

  1. Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health This broad based school offers both a Masters of Public Health (MPH) and a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program. The school also offers dozens of distance learning courses and certificate programs that for medical professionals that enhance public health credentials.

  2. Harvard University School of Public Health offers a Masters of Public Health and a Masters of Health Care Management. Their doctoral program is in Health Policy. However within the school are the Departments of Environmental Health, Health Policy and Management, Society, Human Development and Health, and two others - all of which offer specialized degrees.

  3. University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health has several departments, one of which is the Public Health Leadership Program. Educational opportunities include the Master of Public Health, Master of Science, Occupational Health Nursing Certificate, Online Global Health Certificate, and Public Health Leadership Certificate.

  4. University of Washington School of Public Health includes a Department of Health Services that offers a Bachelors in Public Health - an undergraduate opportunity not always found in public health schools. They offer a Master of Public Health and a Master of Science in Health Services, along with two doctoral degrees.

  5. University of Michigan School of Public Health has a Department of Health Management and Policy for professionals seeking public health administration credentials, and a Department of Epidemiology that while heavy on research activity still provides a graduate program for public education.

  6. Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health has a masters program with a wealth of specialization choices. Their Masters in Public Health includes areas of focus in Aging and Public Health and in Urbanism and the Built Environment within just one of their six departments.

  7. Emory University Rollins School of Public Health offers a Masters of Public Health on campus and a Career Masters of Public Health (CMPH) through their distance learning program.

  8. University of California/Berkeley School of Public Health offers an undergraduate major in public health - for which, their website advises, there is a huge waiting list. There are both a two year track and an eleven month track for the Masters in Public Health with eleven areas of concentration.

  9. UCLA School of Public Health offers academic and professional degrees in the field at both the masters and doctoral level. Their departments include Biostatistics, Community Health Sciences, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, and Health Services.

  10. University of Minnesota School of Public Health bases their masters program on degrees in Public Health and Healthcare Administration. There are also several healthcare certificate and licensure programs "designed for working health and human services professionals with little or no formal public health education, who wish to develop skills and knowledge in a specific area of public health."

  11. University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health offers a Peace Corps International track in their Masters in Public Health program, which includes an overseas posting and a masters thesis based on the experience. They also offer an MPH in Genetic Counseling, a relatively new public health specialization.

  12. University of Texas School of Public Health located in Houston offers both the MPH and the DrPH degree programs. Their dual degree options include a JD/MPH option for law students interested in the field, and an MD/MPH program for medical students.

  13. Boston University School of Public Health has a Department of Health Policy and Management that is research oriented, and a Department of Community Health Sciences that offers, among other specializations, the field of Maternal and Child Health.

  14. Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine has an undergraduate degree, the Bachelor of Science in Public Health, to go along with its six masters degree options and three doctoral options. The tropical medicine track has a global orientation but also has local application in the Louisiana climate.

  15. University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health offers the MPH and the DrPH programs as the baseline graduate options. Dual degrees of interest include the Masters in Nursing/MPH. There are also online healthcare degree options that include the MPH in Community Health Sciences and the MPH in Health Policy and Administration.

  16. University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health offers Masters and Doctoral programs in their five departments: Biostatistics, Environmental Health Science, Epidemiology, Health Behavior, and Health Care Organization & Policy.

  17. Yale School of Public Health was founded in 1915 - one of the nation's oldest. One of the unique areas of study is the Division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology. Included in this area of study are the management of HIV/AIDs, aging, cardiovascular and genetic epidemiology along with several other widespread health issues.

  18. University of Iowa College of Public Health includes MPH degrees in Agricultural Safety and Health, Ergonomics and Industrial Hygiene. There are also combined MPH degrees in Nursing and in Veterinary Medicine.

  19. George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services has an undergraduate degree in Public Health and a five year dual-degree BS/MPH program. Graduate certificates for working professionals include Health Policy, Health Promotion, and Long Term Care among others.

  20. University of South Florida College of Public Health has both an Executive MPH track for working professionals and an online Masters in Public Health option for those who need the flexibility of distance learning.
